Are You Waiting for Someday?

Have you ever talked about something you would really like to do or the type of person you’d like to be and then added the words “well, maybe someday” to the end of it?

If you have, you’re like so many people who wait.  Waiting for:

  • “Extra” money before you invest in yourself
  • The timing to be right
  • Someone else to give you permission

Well, I want to share with you a very big secret… there is no someday on the calendar.

Ironically, one of the most important lessons my mother taught me was not by something she did but by something she didn’t do.  You see there lots of lessons she gifted me by the wonderful things she did or said and the loving way she moved through the world.  Yet I’ve always had a personal sense of urgency for living fully that never really made rational sense until now.  Let me explain…

You see there were a number of things my Mom always said she wanted to do – travel across country, see the west coast, visit Disney, and stay at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, among others.  When I would ask her when she was planning on doing these things she would often say “someday” or “I wish I could” or “it’s just not the right time right now”.  Flustered and frustrated because I really wanted these things for her, I would simply give up asking.  I shared my love of travel and new places through the photos I would take and she would truly enjoy it (and occasionally freak out with some of the activities I’d engage in, like say canyoneering). It was one of my many gifts to her.

One particular dream she had was to stay at The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island not just because it looks beautiful but because it was the setting for the epic story of love in the movie “Somewhere in Time” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.   She watched the movie more than 27 times (literally, not kidding) and could tell you it scene for scene.  She talked about going herself all the time but she never chose to go because she was afraid of taking the ferry and would simply say “it’s too long of a drive”.

What I didn’t realize until she died was that she had finally decided to start to make plans to go with my Dad for their 45th anniversary this year when she got ill.  So whether she would’ve followed through on those plans had remained healthy, I’ll never know.  What I do know is that the pain I feel for her dreams not realized is real and profound.  I also know that it fuels the fire within me of something I’ve known in my gut for years… life waits for no one and the time is now for you to take action on what you say you want to experience and who you want to be.

This is one of the fundamental underpinnings of Life Alchemy™ and the work that I do.

There are no guarantees that any one of us – you or I – are going to be able to do, be, or have all the things that our heart desires in this lifetime.  But you can guarantee that you will not have them if you simply wait for “someday” because “someday” does not appear on any calendar I know of (go ahead – check it out, I’ll wait and if you find it, let me know…).

While I’m not suggesting that you try to do everything today (that’d be crushingly impossible and feel awful), you can tend to the things that matter most to you today. You can choose to focus your time, energy, and commitment to the things you say you most want from your life.  You can make a decision right here, right now to do things differently in the areas of your life – personally and professionally that are not working for you.

Here’s my coach’s challenge for you:

Find a quiet place to sit where you can just be alone for a few moments.  Take a few deep breaths, feel your feet on the ground, and sink inside.

  • Make a list of the things you keep saying you want but haven’t realized yet.  The list might include things like starting a business, taking a trip, visiting a loved one, taking a day off to pamper you, being more creative.  Nothing is too big or too small for the list – get it down.
  • Ask yourself – what am I really waiting for to start making some of these a reality?  (It’s okay if the “someday” word comes to you… don’t beat yourself up, just acknowledge it).
  • Circle the top 3 items from step one that have the highest energy to them.
  • Get started today to take action that will make them a reality.
