Are You Waiting for Permission?

Is there an area of your life in which you are experiencing struggle? Would you suddenly be able to let go, ease into it, and make the changes that would serve your highest good if someone gave you permission and said it was ok?

You are the person with the power to give yourself permission.

When we are children and young adults we are at the mercy of an adult giving us permission for almost everything we do.  While there are some of us who adopted the “better to ask for forgiveness than beg for permission” attitude early, for most of us waiting for permission to do something was the name of the game.

Flash forward ten, twenty, thirty, or more years to your current day life.  Do you ever find yourself?

  • Attending meetings and events that are clearly not a fit for you?
  • Gritting it out to fulfill a commitment you made long ago that you no longer want?
  • Struggling desperately to make something work or bring about a particular result?
  • Jumping through hoops or making yourself available at all hours to please others?

How does that feel?  Does it fuel you?  Does it get you out of the bed in the morning raring to go?

I thought not.  Believe me I know… I’ve been there and sometimes find myself back in one of these situations from time to time.  When I make a commitment I mean it.  I have held onto activities for years longer than I needed or wanted to just because I was afraid to quit or worried what others would think.  I have wrestled, struggled, and resisted like a crazy person reducing myself to tears and agony just trying so hard to get something to work.

I was taught that working hard and making things happen is the path to success.  I was taught that winners never quit and quitters never win. And, you know what? Working hard, persevering, and honoring commitments is crucial if you want to succeed in life.  However, equally if not more important to success and having a high quality life is the ability to give yourself permission to let go of what is nor working for you, doesn’t feel right, and isn’t serving your highest good.

Just imagine how much lighter and freer you would feel if you could let go of one thing that is causing you angst, struggle, and is just plain not bringing you the results you desire.  Wouldn’t that feel like a huge weight was lifted off your shoulders?  Couldn’t you be using all that energy you exert holding on and struggling for something far more productive (or dare I say even fun)?  Don’t you think maybe, just maybe if you let go of what wasn’t working that it would clear the pathways for something far better to come into your life?

I know for a fact – when you give yourself permission to let go and clear out the clutter, something far better always shows itself.  It never fails that when I give myself permission to let go of something or take extra time for self-care, great things happen.  I not only feel better, lighter, more positive, and energized, but the Universe delivers new, exciting opportunities to my door.  It is almost as if the minute I close or at least let go of the door handle, a power greater than myself is there to open it wide and show me the next best step for me.

Here is my coach’s request to you…

Take a few quiet moments and bring to mind a situation, commitment, behavior, obligation, task, routine, or other item that is causing you to struggle or just plain doesn’t feel great.  Now ask yourself:

  • What would happen if I simply gave myself permission to let go of or change this?
  • If I make this change will the earth fall off its axis?
  • Will the choice I make here really matter much, if at all, in 10 years?

All I ask is that you be honest with yourself.  I know when we’re in the heat of things it can seem as if the earth would stop spinning if we did or did not do something; yet, how many of you can remember insignificant details about what was happening 10 years ago?  I know I certainly can’t.

If you find yourself struggling, lacking the confidence to give yourself permission, or simply unable to break out of the pattern of making choices that do not work for you, -contact me today to set up a Get Acquainted Call and learn how coaching can help you develop the ability to give yourself the permission you most need to live your best life.
