What Do You Stand For?Have you ever stopped to ask yourself the powerful questions? What do I stand for? What do I stand for as a person? Who am I really? What do I stand for in my business? Really think about this… what do you want your life to be about? WHO are you? I don’t mean what roles you take on – parent, employee, business owner, partner, daughter, son, etc. Those are all critically important. Yet if you lose yourself in those roles your personal foundation crumbles. You end up feeling:
The reason for this is your compass is broken. You’re not sure what you stand for so it is hard to navigate the direction of your choices. It’s like the old saying “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” There is truth in that because when you’re lacking that compass to point you to your own true north you find yourself subject to the whims of everyone else and getting tossed around by life. If you find yourself saying things like:
Or, having difficulty making decisions then life has got you by the tail and it’s time to re-calibrate or perhaps even get that compass working for the first time in your life. Otherwise I can guarantee you that nothing is going to change. When I talk about getting clear on what you stand for in your life people almost immediate shy away and try to make themselves small. They think – but I don’t want to do anything HUGE with my life. I’m not looking to become the next Elizabeth Cady Stanton who led the fight for women’s rights in the mid-1880’s. I don’t want to lead a company, make a fortune, or lead a nation. To that I say – it is totally OK. It doesn’t matter whether your dreams and aspirations are seemingly big or small, on a grand stage or within your home or community. If you’re not solid about who you are and what you stand for you may just fritter away your one precious life. The world needs you. If you’re not feeling altruistic, then answer the question for purely self-motivated reasons so you know how you want to experience your life. Answering this question for YOU comes first and from there you can build anything you desire upon it. You can extend that purpose to your business or career choices so they serve who you wish to be in the world. When you answer this question clarity rolls in like a wild wind, informing your choices – from the big ones to the little daily ones. With that flows confidence because you then know how you want to show up in your life and if you do that you naturally will be more successful, have more of what you want, and find far more meaning and joy in your days than you thought possible. Does the thought of answering this question scare the crap out of you or leave your paralyzed at the magnitude of it? I understand, it felt like that to me once as well. What I know from working with so many clients is it doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks. With skilled guidance and support it can be the most freeing thing you do.
