What Do You See When You Look in the Mirror?
“I think when we all look in the mirror we see a Picasso.” Just let that statement hang in the air and resonate with you for a moment. It is profound and beautiful on so many levels. Picasso’s work is some of the most famous art in the world. His works of cubism are known for their beauty by those who gaze upon them. Yet those same works might be considered odd or ugly because they do not look like they are “supposed to” look. Forms are split up into different shapes. These shapes are juxtaposed in a unique way to become something new. This captivating uniqueness and what might be considered a flaw by someone wanting a picture that looks a certain way is at the heart of what makes it so beautiful. So consider… when you look at yourself in the mirror do you see the beauty of the Picasso or the flaws? Do you feel your radiance shine forth from the reflection before you or do you recoil at what you believe is “wrong” or somehow “not enough”? Did you know that while you are staring in the mirror seeing and believing only faults, others are out here just dying to see you? Those you are meant to be in relationship with are seeing you as the beautiful Picasso, not the faulty version. However, until you can bring your lens into alignment and see the beautiful Picasso as well, you will always be holding yourself back and keeping others at arms length. I know this is true because I have experienced it personally. I have seen the contrast between holding onto my pain and taking down the armor so others can see me; between trying to fit in and letting go of it all so I can allow myself to be who I really am.
