You might think a website is just about online marketing; one more tool in the business owner’s oversized toolbox.
But it’s not.
It’s personal and emotional.
I resisted burning down my old website for a few years even though it was very clear to me that the design was a bit tired and worn and it no longer reflected my business and brand. I could use excuses like I was busy, didn’t have the money for some design elements, or simply didn’t have the time.
But that would be a lie.
It was because it was scary and a bit overwhelming.
And this from someone who makes this process easy and painless for others!
When you redo your website it is like giving your baby a makeover. You want it to change…but you don’t want it to change! You feel like you are casting out something that has been an integral part of you for a long time (usually at least a few years).
When my mentor threw down the gauntlet and challenged me to trash the old website and launch a new one within 4-6 weeks (a time period that included plenty of client work plus a week of international business travel) it sucked the breath out of me but only for a moment. Then I felt free. Free to get rid of all the complicated things that I built into the old website as makeshift solutions along the way. Free of a site that no longer fit me. Free of email marketing software that was driving me nuts. Free of the confusion and stress it brought me.
While I always do my best to create a safe space for my clients and meet them in both the emotional space and the practical application of web things, undergoing this big of a process myself reminded me just how tender the sensitive spots can be.
I had more than my share of high emotion along the way; I kept on going. I rode those waves and used them to get the job done.
